Rescue of Rebel Fair Cygnet: Show jumper Rebel Fair Cygnet got stuck in a 12ft
Rescue of Rebel Fair Cygnet: Show jumper Rebel Fair Cygnet got stuck in a 12ft.-deep hole yesterday (Sunday 7-8-66). And it took thirty people, two fire engines, two farm tractors, a bulldozer and a 12-ton mobile crane to get the 11-year-old horse out. Fifteen-year-old David Christian raised the alarm when he went to get Rebel ready for a house show. He found his horse trapped in the hole at Winterpick Farm, Mannings Heath, near Horsham, Sussex. Firemen from Horsham and Storrington rushed to the rescue. Acetylene burners cut through an old lorry chassis which was trapping Rebel in the hole. A tree trunk, also in the hole, was cut in two so that slings could be used. For an hour Mrs. Jane Hicks, wife of a horse trainer, held Rebels head. Then it was found that none of the gear could lift Rebel. So a large mobile crane was brought. Eight hours after rescue operations began, a tired, but unhurt Rebel was hoisted to safety. Up he goes....Rebel is finally hoisted to safety from the hole after his eight-hour ordeal. August 1966 P000638
