This exquisite sketch, titled Sketch 29, is an 18th century illustration of Stewartia malacodendron, also known as the silky camellia or L. camellia, from the Passifloraceae family. The drawing is part of a larger collection of original botanical sketches and illustrations by the renowned German botanical artist, Georg Dionysius Ehret (1708-1770). The collection is held in the esteemed Botany Library at the Natural History Museum in London. Ehret's meticulous attention to detail is evident in this representation of the Stewartia malacodendron. The plant is depicted in full bloom, with its large, vibrant red passion flowers unfurling against a backdrop of glossy, green leaves. Passion flowers, such as the Stewartia malacodendron, are angiosperms, or flowering plants, belonging to the Eudicot clade, which includes dicotyledonous plants. This particular sketch bears the intriguing connection to the legendary explorer, Captain James Cook (1728-1779). Cook's botanist on his second voyage, Sydney Parkinson (1745-1771), and Fred Polydore Nodder (1762-1814), a botanical artist who worked with Parkinson, are believed to have contributed to the collection of botanical specimens and sketches that Ehret later illustrated. The Stewartia malacodendron, with its striking red flowers, is a member of the Malpighiales order, within the Rosid clade of the Eudicots. Its common name, 'silky camellia,' refers to the soft, silky hairs that cover the stems and leaves of the plant.
