Dh98 Havilland Mosquito

EDITORS COMMENTS
Captured in this stunning photograph is the de Havilland DH98 Mosquito, registration number LR495 (BIX), a legendary British aircraft that first took to the skies in 1940. This versatile machine, designed by de Havilland Aircraft Company, was initially developed as a fast unarmed photo-reconnaissance and fighter-bomber for the Royal Air Force (RAF). Its distinctive appearance, with its sleek lines and inverted gull wing design, made it a formidable presence in the skies during World War II. The Mosquito was not only a fearsome military aircraft but also a pioneer in the field of wood construction, with its fuselage and wings made primarily of plywood covered in doped fabric. This innovative design not only reduced the weight of the aircraft but also made it more durable and resilient in combat. LR495, part of the Mosquito FB VI series, was one of the many variants of this versatile aircraft. It was armed with four 20mm Hispano cannon and two 0.303-inch Browning machine guns, making it a potent weapon against enemy targets. This particular Mosquito served with distinction in various RAF squadrons, taking part in numerous operations during the war. After the war, the Mosquito continued to serve in various roles, including as a transport aircraft, target tug, and even as a civilian aerobatics performer. Its legacy as a groundbreaking aircraft lives on, with many still in existence today preserved in museums and private collections around the world. This photograph is a testament to the enduring appeal and importance of the de Havilland DH98 Mosquito in the annals of aviation history.
