EDITORS COMMENTS
1. Title: Portrait of Roman Emperor Olybrius (433-472 AD) This portrait depicts Anicius Olybrius, also known as Olybrius Augustus, the Western Roman Emperor from 472 AD. The image is a copperplate engraving taken from the seminal work "De Roomsche Monarchy" (The Roman Monarchy) by Abraham Bogaerts, published in Utrecht, Netherlands, in 1697. Olybrius was the last scion of the ancient Roman noble Anicius family to rule the Western Roman Empire. He assumed the throne following the abdication of his uncle, Leo II, who was the last Roman Emperor to rule both the Eastern and Western Empires. Olybrius' reign was brief, as he was deposed by the Germanic king Odoacer in 474 AD, marking the end of the Roman Empire in the West. The Byzantine Eastern Roman Empire, under Emperor Leo I, continued to flourish and was ruled by a succession of powerful emperors. This portrait, along with others in the same series, highlights the rich history and grandeur of the Roman Empire, a civilization that left an indelible mark on the world. The copperplate engraving technique, a popular method for producing high-quality prints during the 17th century, allowed for intricate details and precise reproduction. This particular portrait of Olybrius exudes an air of regal elegance, with the emperor depicted wearing a traditional Roman toga and adorned with a laurel wreath, symbolizing his imperial status. The portrait serves as a poignant reminder of the Caesars and Kaisers, the legendary rulers of ancient Rome, whose legacies continue to inspire and captivate us. It is a testament to the enduring allure of Rome's classical past and the rich tapestry of history that connects us to our ancestors.
