EDITORS COMMENTS
This exquisite hand-colored lithograph showcases three captivating species of European butterflies: the Painted Lady (Vanessa cardui), Red Admiral (Vanessa atalanta), and European Peacock (Aglais io), also known as Vanesse belle-dame, Vanesse vulcain, and Vanesse paon de jour, respectively. The Painted Lady, with its vibrant orange wings adorned with black spots and a white border, is a migratory butterfly that can be found across Europe, North Africa, and Asia. The Red Admiral, with its distinctive red and black wings, is a common sight in gardens throughout Europe. The European Peacock, the largest butterfly in Europe, is easily recognizable by its iridescent green and blue wings, which bear large eyespots. This stunning artwork is from the collection "Histoire des Papillons" (Story of Butterflies) published by Hippolyte and Polydor Pauquet in Paris in 1833, dedicated to youth at the Museum of Natural History. The intricate details and vivid colors of this lithograph offer a glimpse into the natural beauty and diversity of European butterflies, making it a cherished piece for any nature enthusiast or collector.
