Margaret Sheila Mackellar Chisholm, daughter of Harry Chisholm of Sydney, NSW, Australia married in 1915 Francis Edward Scudamore St Clair-Erskine, Lord Loughborough, eldest son of the fifth Earl of Rosslyn. The marriage suffered from Loughboroughs drinking and gambling and the couple divorced in 1926. In 1920, Albert, Duke of York, the future King George VI was linked romantically with Sheila who, at that point, was still a married woman. She married secondly in 1928, Sir John Millbanke, eleventh baronet (d. 1947) and thirdly, Prince Dimitri Romanoff of Russia in 1954. She died in 1969. Date: 1923

This portrait captures the enigmatic and elegant figure of Lady Sheila Chisholm, nee Margaret Sheila Mackellar, in the year 1923. At this time, Lady Sheila was the estranged wife of Francis Edward Scudamore St Clair-Erskine, Lord Loughborough. Their marriage, marked by Loughborough's notorious drinking and gambling habits, had reached its breaking point and the couple eventually divorced in 1926. Despite the marital troubles, Lady Sheila found herself at the center of societal gossip in 1920 when she was romantically linked to Albert, Duke of York, the future King George VI. The Duke, at the time, was still married to Lady Elizabeth Bowes-Lyon, but the rumors added to the intrigue surrounding Lady Sheila's life. Following her divorce, Lady Sheila married Sir John Millbanke, the eleventh baronet, in 1928. Their union lasted until Sir John's death in 1947. In a surprising turn of events, Lady Sheila married Prince Dimitri Romanoff of Russia in 1954. The prince was a grandnephew of the last Russian Tsar, Nicholas II.
