EDITORS COMMENTS
In this historic photograph, taken at Buckingham Palace in 1943, we see Wing-Commander Guy Gibson (centre) and his fellow dambusters of the Mohne and Eder raids proudly displaying their newly-received honours. Gibson, who had recently led the successful "Dam Busters" raid (Operation Chastise) on the Ruhr dams in Germany, stands amongst his thirty-three comrades, all decorated for their bravery and contributions to the war effort. Gibson, who was born on August 12, 1918, had completed over 170 operations by the age of 26, making him an experienced and respected leader in the Royal Air Force (RAF). His exceptional courage and skill were recognized when he was awarded the Victoria Cross (VC) and Bar to his Distinguished Service Order (DSO), as well as the Distinguished Flying Cross (DFC) and Bar. Gibson became the most highly decorated serviceman in the country following this recognition. However, tragically, Gibson lost his life later in the war. The photograph captures a moment of celebration and pride, as the dambusters bask in the glory of their achievements, unaware of the fate that awaited them. The men are dressed in their uniforms, a testament to their dedication and commitment to their country. The image is a poignant reminder of the sacrifices made by the brave men and women of the RAF during World War II. This photograph is a powerful symbol of the heroism and determination of the Allied forces during the conflict. It is a testament to the courage and resilience of those who served, and a reminder of the importance of recognizing and celebrating their achievements. The dambusters' success in destroying the dams played a significant role in the eventual defeat of the Axis powers, and their story continues to inspire generations.
