1271 Brother Constantinople Exploration Leaving Marco Polo

EDITORS COMMENTS
This image depicts Marco Polo and his brother, Niccolò, bidding farewell to Constantinople, Turkey, around the year 1271. As prominent figures in European history, the Polo brothers are best known for their extensive travels through Asia, which they documented in "The Travels of Marco Polo," a book that fueled European curiosity about the far-off lands. Marco Polo, born in Venice, Italy, was a merchant adventurer who embarked on his journey to the East at the young age of 17, accompanied by his father and uncle, Rusticello and Maffeo Polo. They traveled via the Silk Road, reaching the court of Kublai Khan in China, where they spent 17 years. Upon their return to Europe, they brought with them a wealth of knowledge about Asian cultures, economies, and geography, which was largely unknown to the Western world at the time. In this photograph, Marco and Niccolò are seen in their Eastern attire, ready to embark on their journey back home. The city of Constantinople, then the capital of the Byzantine Empire, is visible in the background, with its iconic walls and towers. The image captures the excitement and anticipation of the brothers as they embark on their journey, forever changing the course of European exploration and knowledge. This photograph is an evocative reminder of the spirit of adventure and discovery that characterized the Middle Ages, as well as the profound impact that the East had on European culture and consciousness. Circa 1271, Marco and Niccolò Polo left Constantinople, Turkey, and set out on a journey that would forever alter the course of history.
