EDITORS COMMENTS
Step into the magical world of London's grandest and most luxurious variety theatre, the London Coliseum, as depicted in this enchanting promotional postcard from the early 1900s. Designed by the renowned theatrical architect Frank Matcham, this architectural marvel was intended to be one of London's premier destinations for popular entertainment. Construction of the London Coliseum began in 1903, and just a year later, on Christmas Eve 1904, its doors opened to the public as the London Coliseum Theatre of Varieties. Located in the heart of the city on St. Martin's Lane, this magnificent building was a sight to behold. The postcard showcases the theatre's stunning facade, adorned with intricate carvings and ornate globes, as well as the elegant carriages that would have transported patrons to and from the theatre. The London Coliseum was known for its grand scale, with a seating capacity of over 3,000, making it one of the largest theatres in the city. The London Coliseum was a hub of entertainment, hosting a wide range of productions from plays and pantomimes to musicals and variety shows. This versatile venue played a significant role in shaping the cultural landscape of London and continues to do so today. This postcard offers a glimpse into the past, transporting us back in time to an era of glamour and excitement when the London Coliseum was at the forefront of popular entertainment.
