EDITORS COMMENTS
This handcolored steel engraving depicts the Carolina Parakeet, Conuropsis carolinensis, a vibrant and distinctive bird that once called North America home. The Carolina Parakeet was the only parrot species native to the continent north of Mexico, and was once abundant in the eastern United States and parts of Canada. The image was created by the skilled hand of Joseph Kidd, as part of Sir Thomas Dick Lauder and Captain Thomas Brown's "Miscellany of Natural History: Parrots," published in Edinburgh in 1833. The Carolina Parakeet was known for its bright green and red plumage, with a yellow face and orange beak. It was a social bird, living in flocks and often roosting communally in large numbers. The species was an important food source for many Native American tribes, who valued the bird for its meat and feathers. Sadly, the Carolina Parakeet is now extinct. The last known wild individual was reportedly sighted in 1904, and the species was declared extinct in 1939. The primary cause of the Carolina Parakeet's demise was habitat loss and hunting for food and feathers. The loss of this iconic and beautiful bird is a reminder of the importance of preserving natural habitats and protecting endangered species. This engraving is a testament to the natural history of the Carolina Parakeet and the artistry of Joseph Kidd. It is a valuable historical record of a bird that once graced the skies of North America, and serves as a reminder of the importance of conservation efforts to protect the world's diverse wildlife.
